Do You Feel
Jacynthe is a recently promoted senior executive at a professional firm. She struggles to grow her division as she now has to rely on others to do the work she requires for success. No matter how much more time she commits, the division is not meeting targets, and she is not growing. Her ADHD has become a challenge, and emotional dysregulation has affected her staff, family, client relationships, and morale. “No matter what I do or change my ways, nobody gets it, and I have to do it all by myself.” She has convinced herself no one likes her or respects her.
I AM SMART AND CAPABLE, RIGHT?
Jacynthe is smart, intelligent and very capable of doing her job. She continues to belittle herself and ask, “Why can’t I get this?” She always believes she is not qualified. She has the ability to do her job, but she can’t follow through on simple tasks until it becomes urgent. Repeatedly she is told she works too fast on certain things and reprimanded for menial administrative tasks like expenses and timesheets.
FOCUS AND DISTRACTIONS
Because of too many distractions, she never accomplishes what she wants in a day. She can only focus when no one in the office. That is why she is the first person in and the last person out of the office, including not stopping for lunch or breaks. She has become a “workaholic,” it is hard for her team to keep up with her pace.
LONG HOURS AND DAYS
Jacynthe is working long hours and not enjoying her days because the extra work is correcting her team’s work. She believes she “should” do a lot of the work because she is the executive and does not trust her team to get it done the right way, the way she would do it. She cannot understand how everyone can just get their day done and go home.
WHAT IS THE POINT OF HAVING STAFF?
Jacynthe is no longer enjoying her work as she is the one doing all the good work. No one is understanding what she delegates and not doing the work to her exceptionally high standards. Therefore, she ends up doing all the finishing touches at the last minute. “What is the point of having staff”?
WHY IS IT SIMPLE FOR THEM AND NOT ME?
The self-help books don’t work, and they don’t help her figure HERSELF out. These books and methods work for everyone else! “Why can’t I figure it out? What is wrong with me? Why can’t I get just one win?” She is frequently told that her way of working is not “normal” and to change. Why is it simple for them and not for me? When she does change her methods, it doesn’t feel natural and more problems arise.
CAN’T MAINTAIN CONFIDENCE
Jacynthe can never get a hold of her confidence. She believes it is easy for everyone else, and everyone is laughing at her or worse, they feel sorry for her. Even though she finished 50 tasks that day, the day was still considered a failure as they were not what she planned to do. Her successes and wins are short-lived with immediate negative self-talk – “I got lucky this time!” or “I could have done better only if I tried a little harder!” OR “If I was better prepared.”
